What to expect at your Pelvic Health Physiotherapy session

  • Your initial physiotherapy session appointment will be up to 60 mins. There will be a large amount of time spent discussing your presenting story and concerns. Most people are anxious and every effort is made to settle your nerves.
    All sessions are Trauma informed and can be modified as indicated.

    There will be questions about

    • Bladder and bowel function

    • Menstrual history

    • Muscle and joint pain

    • Pregnancy and birth history (where relevant)

    • Sexual function

    • Medications

    • Exercise and lifestyle

    • General health

      Understanding your condition fully will assist you and Jo (Physio) to help address your concerns and work towards some realistic goals. This is an important time to feel heard.

      Depending on the individual's circumstances and time an examination will often be done on the first session. Your consent is required for all parts of the session.

      This may be an Physical musculoskeletal assessment and or internal vaginal assessment with your consent. You are welcome to bring a support person.

      A physical examination may include

      • Checking how you move

      • Examination your muscles and joints

      • Vaginal examination

      • Rectal examination

        Internal vaginal/rectal examinations allow the pelvic floor to be accurately assessed. It also may help determine if your symptoms are coming from other sources such as pelvic organs, nerves, muscles.
        A discussion on your examination will follow after the examination whereby a treatment plan will be developed together. Note treatment may not start on your first session.

        This session is alway guided by how much you feel up for on the day and how much time is available.
        Treatment sessions always require a shared comittment to reaching your goals, empowering you to help yourself.
